VMware’s Bangalore campus receives LEED platinum certification

VMware a global leader in cloud infrastructure and business mobility, announced that its campus in South Bangalore has been LEED certified to the Platinum level – the highest LEED rating for green buildings in the world. The LEED rating system, developed by the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC), is the foremost program for buildings, homes and communities that are designed, constructed, maintained and operated for improved environmental and human health performance. According to the USGBC, India has 168 buildings that are LEED Platinum certified today, of which 24 are in Bangalore. VMware’s Bangalore campus has achieved LEED Platinum for implementing practical and measurable strategies and solutions aimed at achieving high performance in sustainable site development, water savings, energy efficiency, materials selection and indoor environmental quality. “While VMware helps customers energize their businesses through virtualization and save energy and financial costs, we also stay committed towards reducing our global corporate carbon footprint as well,” said Renuka Rajagopal, Director, Real Estate & Workplace, VMware India. “It’s an honor to be recognized for the sustainability measures and practices followed at our campus in Bangalore. By taking the lead in developing a state-of-the art campus that has a minimal impact on the environment, we can help create greater awareness on sustainable work environments to educate and inspire others.” A few of the sustainable design and engineering elements that contribute to the building’s energy efficiency include: • Reduction in potable water usage by over 40 percent by using low flow fixtures • Special light fixtures, sensors and efficient lighting design that contribute to reducing energy consumption by over 40 percent • Heat deflection material on the roof, energy efficient glazing and an efficient HVAC (Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning) design that helps contribute to the energy savings compared to conventional HVAC systems • An HVAC design that circulates 30 percent more fresh air than traditional systems, thereby improving the building’s air quality • Adhesives, paints and composite wood products used for the office interiors are low on toxicity and have a zero carbon impact • The campus promotes cleaner modes of transportation for employees by providing cycle stands, bus services, charging stations for electric cars, and incentives for employees that carpool • Over 90 percent of the project’s construction waste was recycled “The green building movement offers an unprecedented opportunity to respond to the most-important challenges of our time, including global climate change, dependence on non-sustainable and expensive sources of energy and threats to human health,” said Rick Fedrizzi, CEO and founding chair, USGBC. “The work of innovative building projects such as VMware’s campus in Bangalore is a fundamental driving force in the green building movement.” Going ahead, VMware’s state-of-the-art campus was inaugurated in April last year, representing a total investment of $120 million. The 438,000 square foot facility in South Bangalore plays a strategic role in VMware’s global growth strategy for the mobile-cloud era. VMware employs over 3,300 employees in India.
