Maharashtra Allows Single Building Redevelopment in MHADA

Maharashtra Government has struck down the decision of not allowing the redevelopment of single buildings in an MHADA layout. It was applicable to Mumbai, Pune, Nashik and Konkan but residents can now take up redevelopment of their dilapidated structures.

The MVA decision disallowed redevelopment of single buildings unless there were exceptional circumstances and instead promote cluster development. In a government resolution (GR) issued, the state housing department said it was not possible to obtain the consent of more than one building for redevelopment. Furthermore owing to internal disputes, the possibility of the redevelopment being delayed cannot be ruled out. This could lead to the loss of life and property and hence the government has been considering scrapping the rule,” stated the GR.

President Droupadi Murmu also gave assent to an amendment to the Mhada Act that allowed the forcible acquisition and redevelopment of old and dilapidated buildings in the island city by the housing authority. There are over 16,000 such buildings in this island city and the redevelopment of 56 buildings has been stalled for years.
